SHATRICK
SHATRICK is an interdisciplinary performance art entity made up of Patrick and Shannon Zaia. The pair met and began dating during their undergraduate degree at the Queensland College of the Art, where they both majored in Sculpture. Bonding over their shared interests in theatre, performance, film, visual art, and popular culture more broadly, the duo began to collaborate, weaving together sculpture, performance, music, video, and printmaking to create immersive installations. At first, their work was explicitly narrative-driven, with the performances appearing almost like mini theatre pieces taking place in sprawling multi-media environments, as evidenced in works like Bathtime Romance and The Salon. As SHATRICK progressed however, the narrative element of their work became more implicit and suggestive as the performances became more focused on repetitive actions and looping gestures, as exemplified in projects like The GARDEN of SHATRICK and GORGEus. Regardless of this subtle shift, notions of hybridity, love, technology, humanity, sex, and transcendence abound throughout all SHATRICK projects, with doses of humour and menace mixed in for good measure. While SHATRICK isn't as active as used to be, Shannon and Patrick still continue to make work individually, but often with the loving and caring assistance of each other.
